Volunteer work project at Camp Wabun.

On the day of the project, people and equipment arrive at the site between
7:30-8:00 for coffee, donuts, and revelry. From there crews are assigned to
different locations throughout the site. Pruning, removals, stump grinding and
wood splitting are examples of the types of work performed during the 3-4 hour
period. A lunch is served in the afternoon concluding the event.
There are two beneficiaries of this donated tree work: the location and the
workers. The location is usually a large property owned by a nonprofit group.
Camps are a good choice because they have lots of trees which are frequently
not cared for. Also, camps, generally, do not have the budget for tree work
on this scale. Approximately $5000.00-8000.00 worth of time and equipment is
donated at one of these work projects. The workers also benefit. Old friendships
are renewed and new ones made. Much of our time in this industry is spent in
the field with small crews. These crews are spread throughout the state and
may not ever see each other. Working with a large crew of competent, professional
arborists is fun. New techniques, old techniques and just showing off, is all
part of this positive work experience. Last but not least is the good feeling
we get when helping somebody out.
The Maine Arborist Association holds what is known as the fall work
project every year. Generally held on the first
or second Sunday in October, this gathering draws 20-50 licensed arborists, epresenting
many different tree care companies.
